Cooperation between the Univesity of Gdańsk and the University of Coimbra (Potugal)

At the begining of October 2019 Beata Bajorowicz and Marek Kobylański from NANOSCI group completed a two-week scientific internship in the team of Professor Rui Martins at the University of Coimbra, which is the oldest university in Portugal. The subject of the internship concerned the study of the effectiveness of new photocatalysts based on TiO2 nanotubes for removing impurities from the water phase in the photocatalytic ozonization reaction. The intership was financed by the National Agency for Academic Exchange under the Bilateral Exchange program between the Republic of Poland and the Portuguese Republic.

Cooperation between the Univesity of Gdańsk and the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel)

From September 2019 Joanna Nadolna has started a 4-month scientific internship at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. The topic of scientific research will be the synthesis of new photocatalytic materials and their physicochemical characterization.

NANOSCI group on the 7th Conference International on Semiconductor Photochemistry - Milan (Italy)

On 11-14 September 2019 the photocatalytic conference was held in Milan. The conference dealt with the following topics: new photoactive materials, solar to electricity conversion, solar to chemical energy conversion (water splitting and CO2 reduction), organic photosynthesis and commercial applications. Member of the NANOSCI group - Marek Kobylański presented the results of research on the preparation of titanium oxide nanotube arrays modified by conjugated polymers for photocatalytic application. 

Cooperation between the Univesity of Gdańsk and the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel)

At the begining of this week Daniel Amgar from the Weizmann Institute of Science came to the Department of Environmental Technology for a short scientific intership. The aim of her visit is to synthesize a new chemical compounds as well as to carry out the photocatalytic hydrogen generation and degradation of pollutants (phenol in the aqueous phase and toluene in the gas phase).

We warmly encourage everybody to take scientific intership in our research group! We believe that the results of such an internships are both in the field of science and development of your interpersonal skills. 

Visit of the Prof. Henry Pinto from Yachay Tech University (Ecuador)

Prof. Henry Pinto visited the Department of Environmental Technology to discuss planned research and joint projects. Prof. Pinto’s main scientific interests are in Condensed Matter Physics and Computational Materials Science applying cutting-edge theoretical and computational methods together with the best available computing resources. His main research topics includes, among others: electronic structure calculations, magnetism and strong correlated systems, mineral and metal-oxide surfaces and interfaces, polymers and metal/polymer interfaces,

Chin Chen PhD thesis defense - Universitate Paris-Sud, Orsay (France)

Last week Prof. Adriana Aleska-Medynska had the pleasure of reviewing the doctoral dissertation entitled "Lanthanide energy Transfer Donors on nanoparticles Surfaces. From Fundamental Mechanisms to Multiplexed Biosensing". Cooperation between the University of Gdańsk and the Escuela Politecnica National as well as the Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas (Ecuador) 

We had the pleasure of giving a course for students from two Ecuadorian Universities: Escuela Politecnica National (EPN) and  Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas (ESPE). Lectures were related with Photocatalysis: basis and application. The lectures were open and attended by students, doctoral students and emploees of the Universities. The aim of the mobility was tio build up the close cooperation between research groups from all universities and to enhance the motivation of non-mobile students to study abroad. We spend a worderful time in beautiful Quito!

Installations for air purification and disinfection - cooperation with Dytrych Sp z o.o. company

Air purification is becoming increasingly important because dangerous levels of air pollution are becoming common in urban areas. The air pollution is contamination of indoor or outdoor air by chemical contaminants, including (i) inorganic and organic contaminants (NOx, SOx, CO and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s)), (ii) pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi) and (iii) particulate matter (PM). One of the most effective method for air disinfection and removing the contaminants is photocatalytic oxidation process, which strongly dependent on air flow rate/residence time, type and concentration of pollutant, humidity, light source and light intensity. The proposed solution are set-ups which can be used: for indoor air purification, for improving the quality of air in the urban agglomerations, for air purification and disinfection in the waste water treatment plants or in the landfills and in the car air conditioning.

Visit of the Prof. Ewa Kowalska from the Hokkaido University Institute for Catalysis (Japan) - Erasmus+ Programme

Last week we had the pleasure to host Prof. Ewa Kowalska from the Institute of Catalysis at the University of Hokkaido. Prof. Kowalska conducted a series of lectures entitled "Fundamentals and applications of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs)" for PhD students of the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Gdańsk. Prof. Kowalska was graduated at Gdańsk University of Technology. She worked in many renowned research units around the world, including the University of Paris-Sud (France) and the University of Ulm (Germany). Currently Prof. Kowalska works as a lecturer at the University of Hokkaido (Japan)

Visit of the Prof. Luis Cumbal from the Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas ESPE (Ecuador) - Erasmus+ Programme

At the beginning of June Prof. Luis Cumbal from the Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas-ESPE in Ecuador was visiting at the Department of Environmental Technology . Prof. Cumbal gave a series of lectures on "Nanotechnology Applied to Water and Soil Treatments" as part of the Erasmus project. The lectures were open for students and employees of the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Gdańsk.

ECO FRESH II device awarded at the Malaysia Technology Expo 2019 - cooperation with Dytrych Sp z o.o. company

The ECO FRESH II device has been awarded once again! This  time the prizes were awarded during the 18th International Expo on Inventions and Innovations on February 21-23, 2019, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Inventors, Adriana Zaleska-Medynska's group from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk, Witold Dytrych from Dytrych  company, as well as Katarzyna Wrześniewska-Tosik, Tomasz Mik and Tomasz Kowalewski from the Institute of Biopolymers and Chemical Fibers in Łódź received three awards:

  • CROATIA INNOVA SPECIAL AWARD, awarded by Croatia INOVA- BUDI UZOR, national exhibition of technical inventions in Croatia

  • Special Award of the Malaysian Association of Creativity and Innovation MACRI - MACRI SPECIAL AWARD

  • SPECIAL GOLD MEDAL, awarded by the Highly Innovative Unique Foundation (HIUF) in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

ECO FRESH II device awarded at the IPITEX 2019 exhibition in Bangkok (Thailand) - cooperation with Dytrych Sp z o.o. company

The International Invention Fair IPITEX 2019 organized by the National Research Council of Thailand took place in Bangkok on February 2-6, 2019. During the fair, we presented the ECO FRESH II device, which removes fat vapors, volatile organic compounds and microorganisms. The device was designed for people using restaurants, bars, canteens and dining rooms exposed to getting from the kitchen (especially so-called open kitchens) of unpleasant smells, fat vapors and harmful compounds resulting from combustion, frying and grilling processes.

This modern device has been awarded:
* GOLD MEDAL by the National Research Council of Thailand
* GOLD MEDAL by the Manila Young Inventors Association
* SPECIAL AWARD by the Indonesian Innovation and Invention Promotion Association
* DISTINCTION from Word Invention Intelectual Property Associations

This device was created in cooperation with Dytrych Sp. z o.o. company and Prof. Krystyna Wrześniewska-Tosik from the Institute of Biopolymers and Chemical Fibers.

NANOSCI group on the Symposium on Nanomaterials for Environmental Purification and Energy Conversion SNEPEC - Sapporo (Japan)

NANOSCI group members gave a series of speeches at a symposium organized at the Hokkaido University. The trip was also an opportunity to learn about local culture. During the post-conference trip the following places on the Hokkaido island were explored: Lake Toya (volcanic caldera lake in Shikotsu-Toya National Park), Shiraoi museum (indigenous people of north Japan and north-east Russia), Noboribetsu (volcanic gas and hot springs), 

Innovations for improving the quality of life - our researchers at Life Science Open Space in Cracow (Poland)

Life Science Open is the place in which the world of science merged with the world of business! However, Life Science Open Space is not only a cooperation platform between scientists looking for challenges in the field of innovation for health and quality of life and entrepreneurs who would like to implement them, but also a place where enthusiasts and recipients of new technologies meet. The interactive form of the event gave the opportunity to start interesting and inspiring conversations on the subject, including modern diagnostics and therapy, issues related to drug development, cosmetology or modern agriculture. On one hand, ideas were presented, on the other - specific cooperation proposals.

Dr Marta Paszkiewicz-Gawron and dr Anna Gołąbiewska from our NANOSCI group presented modern installations and technologies based on the use of nanomaterials with antibactericidal and antifungicidal properties that can be used to purification and disinfection air in urban agglomerations and in closed spaces, where in a relatively small area there are many people.

Wastewater treatment contaminated with pesticides - cooperation with Remondis
Sp. z o.o. company

In cooperation with Remondis Sp. z o.o. company we carried out research on the wastewater treatment contaminated with pesticides. Sewage was treated using the activated sludge method. We applied aeration and biological biofilm composed of bacteria and protozoa. The SBR reactors sysytem was built for these experiments. The result of the research was a thesis written by Mr. Karol Łukowicz, entitled: "Assessment of the efficiency of activated sludge in the treatment of sewage contaminated with pesticides using the SBR reactor" ("Ocena efektywności osadów czynnych w oczyszczaniu ścieków zanieczyszczonych pestycydami z wykorzystaniem reaktora SBR").

NANOSCI group on the NanoTech Poland International Conference and Exhibition - Poznań (Poland)

At the begining of June the members of NANOSCI group participated in an international conference organized by the  NanoBioMedical Centre and Faculty of Physics Adam Mickieiwcz University in Poznań.  According to organizers the conference was designed to bring together the scientific community - principal investigators, researchers, scientists, clinicians, analysts, policy makers and industry experts to discuss the perspectives in research and development in the nanotechnology field.
